What happened when Morgan Wallen’s ex tried to leave him according to Katie Smith?

In a new interview, Morgan Wallen‘s ex-girlfriend Katie Smith is opening up about their “toxic, trauma bond” relationship before the birth of their son.

Smith, who dated the country singer for two years before they broke up in early 2018, says she was drawn to Wallen because he was “so broken.”

“I was so broken and he was so broken and I wanted to fix him and he wanted to fix me and it just turned into this toxic, trauma bond,” she tells Billboard. The two were living together when Smith got pregnant, but she says things quickly went downhill.

“He was just really emotionally abusive,” she says. “He would call me names, he would put me down, he would make me feel less than. It got to the point where I was like, ‘I can’t do this anymore.’” Smith says she tried to leave Wallen on multiple occasions, but he would always “chase her down.”

“He would use my son as a tool to get me back,” she says. “He would be like, ‘If you leave, you’re not going to see your son again. I’ll take him away from you.’ And I was like, ‘I can’t live like this anymore.’”

Smith eventually went to a domestic violence shelter and got a restraining order against Wallen. She says she didn’t see her son for six months after that. Now, Smith is speaking out about her experience in hopes of helping other women in similar situations.

“I want other women to know that they’re not alone,” she says. “No one deserves to be treated the way I was treated. And if you are in a situation like that, please reach out for help.”
