Thijs Van Leer is a Dutch musician and flautist best known for heading the progressive rock band Focus. Born on March 31, 1948 in the Netherlands, Van Leer received his first flute from his father at age eleven and he studied History of Art at Amsterdam University.

In the 1970s, Van Leer’s band Focus had two Gold records with Moving Waves and Focus III, which spawned the international hit singles ‘Hocus Pocus’ and ‘Sylvia.’ He also recorded several international hits with Jan Akkerman. In 2010, he was made a Knight of the Order of Orange-Nassau.

Van Leer is married to Thea and they have a daughter named Berenice. In addition to playing the flute, Van Leer also plays whistles and can yodel. He has been a major influence in the progressive rock genre and is still actively performing and recording music.
