Before fame, Bromfield ended his studies at the outbreak of World War I and volunteered for the Foreign Service, driving combat ambulances in France. Many of his novels, including Green Bay Tree, Early Autumn, and A Good Woman, deal with the theme of individuals trying to defy family and tradition.
